The Gaze of the Sands

Wadi Rum is a landscape defined by high geological and cultural relief. For generations, the ancestors of the Bedouin lived within these sandstone walls, their culture became shaped by the physical demands of this stunning surrounding. This series aims to capture the process of 'cultural modernization', expressed in the geographical term of 'denudation'. This series was captured during a documentary film project in the Wadi Rum desert. In this image, the guide’s face is a map of his history in Wadi Rum. By looking directly at you, the photographer, he creates a "shared gaze" that connects his ancient culture to your camera. The binoculars show how his world is changing; he uses modern tools to keep his traditional role as a protector. His strong stare tells us that he sees you, he sees the desert, and he sees the future arriving.
