The Legal Side, Without the Noise

by Ivo Cornel

How do buyers know your work is real and respected? Explore the legal backbone that builds trust with every sale.

When you put your work into the world, you are also putting your name on the line. I have always believed that matters. The legal structure behind Framed.Photo is not there to make things complicated. It is there to protect your photography, to give buyers confidence in what they are choosing to live with, and to make sure every part of the process respects the value of what you have created.

One of the first decisions we made was that we give the option for photography on the platform to be treated as a limited edition. However, that is not necessary and you may also choose to sell your photography limitless.

Yet, limited edition means you choose the number of prints that can ever be made from one image. You might decide on an edition of ten, twenty-five, or even a hundred. But once you set that number, it does not change. No more prints will be added. That rule is there for a reason. It ensures that each edition keeps its meaning, and that each print carries real value.

Each time your photograph is sold, the edition number is printed directly onto the piece. It shows exactly where that print fits within the total edition. For example, if someone receives number eight out of twenty-five, they will know they hold something specific and irreplaceable. That number also links to a certificate of authenticity, which is stored on our site. The buyer can download it at any time, and if they ever decide to pass the work on, we can transfer the certificate to the new owner. That certificate becomes part of the life of the photograph. It keeps a record, and over time, it adds to the story.

Framed.Photo does not ask you to be exclusive. You are free to sell your other work wherever and however you choose. All we ask is that the edition we agree on stays fixed. If a series sells out, it remains sold out. That simple principle is how we protect your work, and how we build trust with the people who choose to live with it.

The work you upload also needs to follow EU law. That does not mean you have to stay safe or conservative in your vision. On the contrary, powerful work often challenges and provokes. But it does mean the photography must be created with care, and it must remain legal. For me, that is not a limitation. It is a framework that allows everything else to stand. When the boundaries are clear, the freedom inside them is stronger. Artists can work without second-guessing. Buyers can collect without hesitation. And the art itself can carry its value, now and in the future.

If you want to read through the legal foundation in detail, we have published the full Terms and Conditions for artists. It is worth setting aside a little time to go through it properly. It explains how everything works, from licensing to payout.

For the quick questions, we also put together a FAQ that answers the things most photographers ask when they are just getting started. And if there is anything else you are unsure about, you can always reach out to me directly at ivo@framed.photo. I read every message. Let’s make art live.
