Digital Nomad - Denudation Series 1

Wadi Rum is a landscape defined by high geological and cultural relief. For generations, the ancestors of the Bedouin lived within these sandstone walls, their culture became shaped by the physical demands of this stunning surrounding. This series aims to capture the process of 'cultural modernization', expressed in the geographical term of 'denudation'. This series was captured during a documentary film project in the Wadi Rum desert. For this photograph, I watched a man drop to his knees at the horizon. This expression exhibits the ancient and traditional posture of prayer. Yet, in our modern day and age, it seems that the intent behind the position slowly has shifted. Today, the nomad holds a phone, he still steadies his breath: not to speak to God but instead to capture the light he shines down on us. The digital tool symbolizes to me a new agent of erosion. With so many tourists recording their horizons, we seem to have transformed what was once a localized experience, a god given wonder, into a transportable asset. It seems to me that the vertical depth of ancestral Bedouin life is being flattened into a horizontal exchange of data.
